How To Get White Teeth

Cosmetic Dentistry has become very popular. The most common cosmetic procedure by far is teeth whitening. People feel more attractive and self-confident with a beautiful smile.

How does tooth whitening work? Common for all products and methods is that they apply hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to your tooth that brightens it up. Even the dentists don’t know exactly how it works but they say it’s safe, doesn’t harm and the only side effect is increased sensitivity which should go away within 24 hours.

The difference lies in the peroxide concentration. The higher the concentration the stronger the bleaching effect. But stronger is not necessarily better because very white teeth look unnatural. That’s one of the reasons why the cheap over-the-counter bleaching sets you can buy in your local drugstore only contain a low concentration of the bleaching ingredient. They are less effective and you have to use them often to see a difference.

It’s by far more effective, therefore, to go to your cosmetic dentist. He has products with much higher peroxide concentration like Britesmile or Zoom and he knows how to use them efficiently to get faster results. You can choose between a custom-made tray for home use or the power bleaching treatment in the praxis. The tray is cheaper and works as well as the power bleaching but you must use the tray for several days for about two hours a day.

The power bleaching is done immediately and results are instant as well. After protecting your gum from the peroxide, the cosmetic dentist puts the bleaching gel onto your teeth. Often laser or ultra violet light is used to increase the power of the gel. After one or two hours you are done and your teeth are several shades whiter.

Don’t get disappointed when your teeth are not getting much whiter. There is no guarantee that it works, especially gray teeth or teeth which got colored by an injury; they are not whitening well. But you can expect good results for yellow teeth or teeth which became stained by smoking, drinking, food or coffee.

How much is it? While the power bleaching can cost up to $1000, the tray is about half the price. Unfortunately, dental cosmetic procedures are not covered by your insurance. But it can get even more expensive. Dentists say that many bleaching patients sooner or later move over to porcelain veneers for longer lasting and perfect white teeth. Dental porcelain veneers are up to $1200. Per tooth. But if you want a smile like a movie star then you won’t look at the price.

Cosmetic Dentistry, Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are another fantastic tool used in cosmetic dentistry to help create that perfect smile. Unlike crowns which cover the whole tooth, dental veneers are wafer-thin shells of porcelain which are just bonded to the front of your teeth.

Porcelain itself it a fairly brittle material but the bonding process adds additional strength to a veneer leaving you with a beautiful, durable and completely natural looking tooth. Dental veneers take on the appearance of enamel and provide the means for a truly remarkable cosmetic restoration.

Although porcelain has amazing crushing strength it doesn’t react well to twisting so once you have had a tooth or your teeth veneered you need to avoid foods that will require any kind of gnawing or twisting action.

Dental veneers have a variety of uses with veneers being used as an alternative to tooth whitening, braces, crowns and other Cosmetic Dentistry techniques. Porcelain veneers can be used to disguise discoloured or chipped teeth, close gabs, straighten teeth, assist with realignment and reshape your smile.

Veneers have a distinct advantage over dental crowns in that there is no requirement for the tooth to be ground down prior to the veneer being bonded to the tooth. In addition, veneers tend to be more aesthetically pleasing providing you with an even more natural appearance.

Given the nature of a veneer, in that it is bonded to the front of your tooth, veneers are only of any use for cosmetic restoration of front teeth.

Getting a veneer is so easy and a great alternative for those hate the dentist chair. An initial visit will involve your cosmetic dentist taking an impression of your teeth and you may require some minor contouring work. The second visit will be purely for the veneer to be bonded into place providing you with an instant and fantastic looking result.

With teeth that are too damaged for a veneer you can use a veneer in conjunction with a crown to obtain a perfect finish.

Dental veneers are basically used for aesthetic purposes so are unlikely to be covered by your dental insurance although you might get some level of discount if you have a dental care plan.

As with most cosmetic dentistry veneers do not come cheap with a single porcelain veneer likely to set you back $700 to $1500 although the lower end of the range is more common. There is an alternative which is a composite veneer which comes with a significantly reduced price tag (around $250) but the material has a shorter lifespan and obviously doesn’t provide you with the same quality result.

The Beauty of Porcelain Veneers

Dental veneers are thin customized covers put over the front surface of a tooth. The porcelain they’re made of is remarkably like tooth enamel in the way it behaves with light. They are both semi-translucent. They absorb some light and reflect some, so that they have the same sort of pearly shine and a porcelain dental restoration cannot be distinguished from natural teeth.

Veneers are not placed on back teeth. They’re used for front teeth as a quick way to give you a new smile. If you have any small chips on your teeth, or front teeth that are a bit crooked, or gaps between them that show when you smile, porcelain veneers could be an excellent option for you.

Chips

Large chips might need repair work for your dental health, such as a porcelain filling or crown. But a small chip can simply be covered with a porcelain veneer. Your cosmetic dentist would send information and images of the tooth to a dental lab, where a customized veneer would be shaped exactly right to give the chipped tooth a new front surface.

Crookedness

Extreme crowdedness and crookedness would indicate that all the teeth are out of alignment, which would need orthodontic treatment. Misaligned teeth can cause TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disease), which is a misaligned jaw joint. It has many painful symptoms and needs to be diagnosed and given its own treatment.

But if the crookedness is slight enough it can be covered with one or more porcelain veneers. The teeth would not have to be moved into better alignment. The shiny new porcelain front surface would replace the previous crookedness in your smile.

Gaps

In past years, if a person had gappy teeth, they wore metal braces, but we’re fortunate to live in a world of more choices. If the gaps are not so large as to be throwing your bite out of alignment, they can be treated without moving the teeth. Large gaps, like extreme crowdedness, might need orthodontic work.

However, small gaps are easily and beautifully treated with porcelain veneers. The veneers are placed on teeth each side of the gap, and each veneer is slightly wider than the tooth it covers. Each one extends very slightly across the gap. This is a dramatic and fast way to transform your smile.

Discoloration

Most yellowing and staining can be removed by a tooth whitening procedure. But when a child is given tetracycline while the teeth are developing, that causes deep stains, too deep for a whitening agent to reach. Genetic factors and trauma can also cause deep stains. If you have any such discoloration and tooth whitening agents have not been effective, porcelain veneers are an excellent solution. The veneers would be custom-made to fit exactly over your teeth, replacing the front surfaces and giving you a bright, evenly white smile.

The Procedure

Two visits are needed with two or three weeks in between while the dental lab makes your veneers. In that waiting period, you can have temporary veneers, or not, as you choose.

In the first visit, your cosmetic dentist evaluates, measures, photographs and collects all the information needed for the dental lab to make your veneers. He or she also prepares the teeth surfaces for veneer attachment, by removing a very slight amount of tooth enamel. This makes room for the thin veneers.
In the second visit, the cosmetic dentist attaches the veneers temporarily, so that he can check for fit and comfort. When you are both satisfied, he will bond them permanently to the teeth. They are now part of those teeth and will not fall off. They will need the same regular brushing and flossing that you give your natural teeth.

What To Look For In A Cosmetic Dentsist

Filed Under (Bakersfield cosmetic dentists) by admin on 20-02-2009

One of the main pitfalls of Cosmetic Dentistry is choosing the wrong cosmetic dentist. As with plastic surgery and other cosmetic procedures, a successful result is largely dependant on the professional and in this case cosmetic dentist that you choose.

Most cosmetic dentistry is extremely visual with poor results being immediately apparent to everyone you see. If you want to feel good in the knowledge that you look good then you need to make sure you are careful when selecting a cosmetic dentist to perform your cosmetic procedure.

As with most things it’s easy to get ahead of yourself once you have decided to undergo a cosmetic procedure and just choose a dentist as quickly as possible without giving quality of work any consideration. Most people believe that a dentist is a dentist and that all dentists can perform cosmetic dentistry procedures to the same standard.

The truth is that mainstream family dentists are not trained in the field of cosmetic dentistry and not all cosmetic dentists are able to adequately perform every cosmetic procedure. A dentist who is good at dental implants or dental bridges may not be so experienced in dental bonding for example and a cosmetic dentist that specialises in teeth whitening might be good with whitening products and dental veneers but not so experienced in dental braces.

A good starting point is to get a recommendation for a cosmetic dentist from someone who has already had some cosmetic dentistry work done or, if you are friendly with your family dentist they may be able to point you in the direction of a cosmetic dentist who specialises in the cosmetic procedure that you are interested in having done.

If you can’t get a good recommendation and you have to resort to yellow pages to find a cosmetic dentist in your area don’t be afraid to check out a few.

Prices are something that you need to know but shouldn’t be the only basis for making your final decision as to which cosmetic dentist you choose.

Go for an initial consultation with more than one cosmetic dentist to get a good feel for the surroundings and what experience the dentist has. Discuss what you want to have done and listen to what the cosmetic dentist has to say and then compare the response with future and/or previous consultations.

Don’t be afraid to ask to see before and after photos of previous clients smile makeovers (clarify that the pictures you are shown are the dentists own work) and make sure that any cosmetic dentist you choose has the relevant experience in the area of cosmetic dentistry that you require.

If you want a recommendation a good cosmetic dentist shouldn’t have a problem with arranging for you to speak to previous clients that have had similar treatment to what is being proposed for you.

At the end of the day cosmetic dentistry is an art. The work that a cosmetic dentist performs is one of the very first things that is seen by everyone you meet. If you want cosmetic dental work then the likelihood is that you care about how you look so take your time, do some ground work and only entrust your cosmetic dentistry procedure to the best cosmetic dentist you can find.

Tips For Choosing A Cosmetic Dentist

Filed Under (Bakersfield cosmetic dentists) by admin on 16-02-2009

There has been a huge upsurge of women as well as men who are interested in Cosmetic Dentistry in some form or the other. Teeth whitening procedures in particular have become extremely popular. It seems like everybody is unhappy with the color of his or her teeth and are willing to do anything to get their teeth looking whiter.

Here we cover some basic aspects of teeth whitening and how to find the perfect cosmetic dentist to suit your requirements.

Talk to Others — Word of Mouth

If you asked around you would be sure to find someone amongst your family and circle of friends or colleagues who would have already been to a cosmetic dentist. Ask all of them to give you their opinion of the cosmetic dentist they have visited. This is the best way to get first-hand information so you can then pick and choose a cosmetic dentist who most suits you.

The Internet as a Resource For Cosmetic Dentists

The Internet ?that bottomless pit of information on just about anything you can think of, is the best place to look for a professional cosmetic dentist. Check the World Wide Web for a cosmetic dentist who specializes in teeth whitening procedures. Check out if there any in your area and read the reviews so you know what others are saying about that dentist.

There are some sites that provide you with information about different cosmetic dentists so you can compare the services offered. But you could also visit the website owned by individual cosmetic dentists where you would find details of all the services they provide. Check if teeth whitening is included among the services.

Visit a Cosmetic Dentist Office

After you’ve done all the background research that you can, now go and personally visit the clinics of a few cosmetic dentists. Make an appointment for a teeth whitening consultation so you can get a feel of the clinic as well as the staff who run it. How you are treated by the various staff members on your first visit to the clinic is an indication of the treatment you can expect to receive on subsequent visits.

Check that cleanliness and hygiene is strictly maintained in all aspects. Most important, watch the dentists attitude towards his patients and his staff. All these observations are very important and go towards forming your opinion about whether this is the right place for you or not. After all there are other cosmetic dentist that you could check who also are reputed for doing teeth whitening procedures.

Experience is Important

Teeth whitening may be a fairly simple procedure, yet you want to be absolutely sure that nothing will go wrong. Practice makes perfect! Keeping this in mind, go to a cosmetic dentist who you know has had a lot of teeth whitening practice if you want to get a perfect job done on your teeth.

Cosmetic Dentistry For Missing Teeth

Filed Under (Cosmetic Dentistry) by admin on 13-02-2009

Teeth are those little seemingly insignificant creations that, on the face of it, don’t appear that important until you loose them! Luckily for you and the innovations in cosmetic dentistry, if you’ve learnt your lesson the hard way, there are still lots of things you can do to replace lost teeth and protect those teeth that you still have left.

If you have failed in your dental care routine, lost teeth due to health issues or had an accident that has left you somewhat lacking in the tooth department then checking out cosmetic dentistry options is the right way to go.

There are several procedures available for replacing missing teeth not all of which are suitable for every patient so you need to get checked out by a good cosmetic dentist.

Dentures can be used to replace any number of missing teeth from one to a complete upper and lower jaw. Dentures are generally the cheapest option and the most likely cosmetic dentistry choice if you are seeking dental insurance support for your dental reconstruction.

If you are looking for a more natural result from your cosmetic dentistry then a dental bridge might be an answer. A dental bridge can be used to replace one or more teeth (but not really an option for a significant number of teeth) and is effectively a false tooth or teeth held between two crowns or a cheaper option is to attach a wire to the back of adjoining teeth to fix the false tooth in place (the cheaper alternative is only a viable solution for front teeth).

Another alternative open to you is a dental implant (tooth implant) which is unlikely to be covered under your dental insurance but a procedure in cosmetic dentistry that leaves you with a completely natural looking smile. A dental implant is a more invasive cosmetic dentistry procedure that involves a pin being fixed into the jaw (requires good bone structure). Once the pin is securely in place a dental crown is used (as a cap) to replace your missing tooth or teeth. Dental implants can be used for a complete dental reconstruction but is extremely costly.

If you are just missing the top half of your tooth then a dental crown is a good way to go and for a even more natural look use the latest innovations in cosmetic dentistry by combining a dental crown with a dental veneer.

Whatever method you choose make sure you use a recommended cosmetic dentist with the relevant expertise. A dentist that performs Cosmetic Dentistry procedures (for your particular problem) in volume and is a recognised and respected dentist in his field of cosmetic dentistry is far more likely to give you the best result at the best possible price.

Cosmetic dentistry procedures offer patients high-tech ways to get the beautiful, natural-looking smile they’ve always dreamed of. Technology in Cosmetic Dentistry is ever-evolving, with more efficient and more successful methods being made available all the time. The best cosmetic dentists are smile artists, as well, and are able to combine state-of-the-art techniques and artistic skills to create the most beautiful results. Having a beautiful smile can improve a person’s quality of life and increase their confidence and self-esteem.

Often cosmetic dentistry purposes offer patients not only better-looking teeth, but improved bite and function. Straightening crooked and twisted teeth can also improve other health problems, such as TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) problems or headaches.

Many cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as veneers, inlays, and bonding, are extremely expensive, which can prevent many people from getting their smile improved. Dental tourism has emerged as a great way for people to obtain the cosmetic dentistry procedures they want and need at prices they can afford. Today’s affordable and convenient travel makes dental tourism financially accessible to many people.

Not all cosmetic dentists are created equal, and choosing the right one is a very big decision. Consider the training of the dentist, the accreditation of the clinic, cost of the procedures, and the customer service plans of the dental company. Dental Care London offers the highest quality cosmetic dentistry procedures, superior training for their dental professionals, and top-notch customer service that is available 24 hours a day. Not only does Dental Care London give you a beautiful smile, they’ll make you want to use it!

No Worries With Porcelain Veneers

Filed Under (Cosmetic Dentistry) by admin on 05-02-2009

Sometimes those little defects in teeth can become all-consuming. Fears that someone will be staring at your teeth when you smile or laugh may become so large that you try to keep from doing these things in front of people. The reality is that most people may have one or two minor issues with their teeth. Maybe they’re stained, or there are gaps or chips that keep the self-conscious from concentrating on other things. A solution to this is having porcelain veneers placed on the teeth to fix the defects in a dramatic fashion. In addition to stains, gaps and chips, porcelain veneers can fix cracks and uneven shapes. Veneers are thin shells that fit the front of your teeth to give it more strength and a new appearance.

Process

The porcelain veneers process takes two visits to a cosmetic dentist. The first visit includes removing the enamel of the teeth that will receive the veneers. This includes making the surface rough or reshaping the front of the teeth. This will allow the veneers to have the space they need. An impression is then taken of your teeth. This impression is used to custom-make the veneers in a laboratory. This usually takes two weeks. During this two weeks, you will wear temporary veneers until your permanent porcelain veneers are ready, which are then bonded to your teeth during the second visit.

Concerns

Some people who may want veneers have concerns about the loss of their natural enamel during the preparation. While there is some variation between the amount of enamel removed, cosmetic dentists ideally only remove 0.3 to 0.5 mm of enamel. This may be more of a concern to older patients, as our tooth enamel thins as we age. There is a possibility that older patients will have all of their enamel removed in preparation for their porcelain veneers. However, because this enamel is being replaced with a tough veneer, this concern is, or should be, allayed. This is because tooth decay around the veneer does not happen. The bonding used does not allow bacteria to enter the tooth, and the relatively long lifespan of the veneers keeps this problem to an absolute minimum.

Porcelain veneers may last as long as ten years if cared for properly. Studies have shown a retention rate above 90% even after three years. However, if a porcelain veneer is lost, the preparation marks in your teeth will show as a dent in the middle of your tooth. If this happens, the veneer must be replaced quickly, especially if all of your enamel was removed to place it.

Have a Modern Lifestyle With Cosmetic Dentistry

Smile! A simple pep talk can make us feel uncomfortable and embarrassed. Stains, spots, uneven teeth, gaps, cavities or cracks can seem a nightmare in a society that requires more and more smiles. Well, smile! Cosmetic Dentistry is here to help. Teeth whitening, porcelain dental veneers, laser bleaching, braces and bridges¦ they are all solutions to your problems.

Research in cosmetic dentistry allows us today to have the perfect smile.  Teeth whitening is probably the easiest way. Peroxide based materials are usually used in order to achieve bright, attractive smiles. How does cosmetic dentistry work in this case? Well, dentists have been trying to answer this dilemma for the past 10 years and they have come up with two possible solutions to the problem: in-office teeth whitening and at-home treatment. What is this all about anyway?

Let’s see…the in-office teeth whitening method resides in your dentist making molds of the teeth, forward them to a laboratory and in a period of just one week get your made-to-order mouthpiece back. After that, you would just have to stay for a couple of endless hours with your new plastic teeth whitening molds cemented in peroxide on your discomforted gums. And this wouldn’t be all, of course… After a week of annoying appointments with your dentist, you would have to pay to cover all charges. Well, some would call that a crisis! But do not worry! Your dentist can come up with other cosmetic dentistry procedures to get your teeth whiter. One of them would be an in-office brief process called Laser Bleaching (known as well as Power Bleaching or Argon Bleaching). This teeth whitening high-tech method consists of a one-time application of a concentrated peroxide gel which will be let to dry for an hour. Afterwards, the dried peroxide mixture would be heated with a laser beam (generally argon) to complete the cosmetic dentistry process.

Until a few years ago, home teeth whitening wasn’t a real option for the majority of people as cosmetic dentistry prices were too high. Nowadays, money isn’t an issue anymore. There are two practical opportunities available on the cosmetic dentistry market to satisfy everyone’s needs.

The first one is the brush-on teeth whitening method. It was designed for people with busy lifestyles who didn’t have time for an elaborate cosmetic dentistry treatment. All they wanted was to get over their teeth whitening procedure as fast as possible. And now, you can as well. You just have to cover your teeth in the special overnight formula and voila… your teeth whitening problems are completely over. Sounds fair, doesn’t it? There are just two small flaws. The first one is the possibility that you will wet your special formula with too much saliva and you’ll rub it off. The second one refers to the alcohol content of the teeth whitening formula which might give you a bad breath. This would be an unfortunate case as there have been just a few isolated throughout all cosmetic dentistry history. Moreover, the teeth whitening formula contains a special breath-mint ingredient that will surely solve your bad breath problem. Apart from these two issues, one can’t argue that the special overnight teeth whitening formula represents one of the best treatments offered, for now, by modern Cosmetic Dentistry.

The second home teeth whitening solution is the whitening strips method created recently by cosmetic dentistry specialists. These strips that are applied on your teeth commonly compose from an upper strip and a lower strip that are both pushed against the outside surface of your gums. Of course this not-so-scientific cosmetic dentistry process causes stains and blotches of whiter or darker regions on teeth. This teeth whitening problem occurs as your teeth aren’t perfectly flat. They have recesses and ridges. That’s why this last teeth whitening procedure isn’t so popular. No cosmetic dentistry expert recommends it.

In the end, cosmetic dentistry remains a highly debated issue. Even if it is generally admitted that there are a series of disadvantages to all these procedures, cosmetic dentistry and especially teeth whitening methods can be the answer to many problems. As long as a smile can bring more success than anything else, cosmetic dentistry has a bright future ahead. Therefore, look on the bright side of things and “Smile!”
